Operation Jack Marathon Wrap-Up

The Operation Jack Marathon & Half Marathon presented by Apriori was a massive success. Held on December 26, our course started on the South Bay Bike Path at the northern edge of Manhattan Beach. The weather was perfect. We ended up with 151 registered runners, with 31 marathoners and 100 half marathoners showing up race morning. The morning was hectic but exciting as the 30+ volunteers worked to set up the registration area & aid stations. Really, things went really smooth. Parking was plentiful, registration was smooth, and folks raved to me about how great the volunteers were. Soon, 7:30 rolled around and the race start was upon us.

And off we went. Runners headed north on a cool, dry day for 4.5 miles before along the beach before turning east and heading straight for the snow-covered mountains north & east of Los Angeles for 2 solid miles. We went back, halfathoners were done and marathoners headed out for lap 2. Personally, I staggered through 13.1 in just about 2 hours and 3 minutes, not very fast– not even for me. It was still a great race for me, talking with the other runners, thanking the volunteers & conducting informal surveys along the way. It was great how well things went– including fundraisers, the satellite runners, sponsors & runners we raised about $20,000 for Operation Jack and Train4Autism.  Hermosa Beach resident Christian Burke won the men’s marathon in 3:06:21, trailed by Adam Johnson all the way from Anchorage! Rachel Fixsen came all the way from Maryland won the women’s marathon. The men’s half marathon was won by Roger Schmidt of Safety Harbor, Florida in 1:26:16, followed closely by Hermosa runner Jake Courtney. Finally, Manhattan Beach’s own Alison Atkinson in 1:29:36. Special credit goes to Pat Sweeney for cycling alongside & goading many of these runners to finish just a few seconds faster.

So there is tons to say, and many have said it. So below are all the blog entries, newspaper stories and TV segments about the Operation Jack Marathon & satellite races. Dunno if you can read all 60, so if you can only read a few, check out the following: Sam’s post race wrap-up, Pat Sweeney‘s view from the cyclist’s seat, Elisabeth‘s volunteer report, Yolanda Holder‘s look at her record-tying 105th marathon of the year, and the Daily Breeze‘s post-race wrap up report on South Bay Pipeline & subsequent follow-up. If you prefer to watch, check out these reports from the NBC and ABC stations in Los Angeles.

OK, there’s still more to discuss. First, check out the official race website for further updates. And there are over a thousand great photos, including 800+ photos from official photographer Doug Brenizer of SurfDaddy photography, one of the most talented photographers in Los Angeles. Prints can be easily purchased, or buy a digital download for only $5 with all proceeds going to the Operation Jack Autism Foundation. I uploaded several dozen to Flickr that can be snagged by anyone, as can the couple hundred photos from Karol Yankowski on Picasa. Still looking for results? Download full & half marathon results. So another photo, then links to 60 news bits, then another photo.
